About CRYPTO 100 ® Crypto Index

CRYPTO 100 is a rules based crypto index that tracks the top 100 cryptoassets, functioning similarly to the FTSE 100 for UK equities but specifically for cryptoassets. It offers a clear, independent index that anyone can track, license, and utilise.

We are part of the Crypto Owl ® family of crypto education brands, who provide free beginner friendly crypto guides, structured courses, and informative videos. 

Crypto Owl Limited is founded by successful Dragons‘ Den winners Neil Westwood and Nancy Westwood. They won £100,000 investment from Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden for their Magic Whiteboard invention.

Rather than being a fund, an exchange, or a trading product, CRYPTO 100 ® serves as a neutral and independent index benchmark. It works in tandem with our Crypto Owl independent crypto educational platform, forming the long term, rules based "market" layer of our crypto education ecosystem.

What CRYPTO 100 is

CRYPTO 100 is a rules based crypto index of the top 100 cryptoassets selected using our unique VALT Score. Unlike merely listing the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, CRYPTO 100 employs a replicable formula that prioritises volatility, adoption, liquidity, and tokenomics (the VALT Score) over market cap. This design reflects a focused basket of the most traded and established coins, resulting in a less volatile and more curated top 100 of cryptoassets. Riskier, hype driven cryptoassets do not meet the VALT Score criteria and are thus excluded from the CRYPTO 100 Index. This approach helps the general public, platforms, and ETFs share a standardised view of the crypto market.

How CRYPTO 100 works

The VALT Score Adjusted Size principle is at the core of CRYPTO 100, blending market cap with the VALT Score (volatility, adoption, liquidity, and tokenomics) to identify the top 100 assets. Weighting caps are implemented to limit how large a single asset can become, including Bitcoin, while also capping the top 10 assets to maintain a diversified basket. The index is recalculated daily and rebalanced quarterly to ensure it remains aligned with the live market.

Neutrality and independence

CRYPTO 100 is not owned or controlled by any single exchange or trading platform. It is administered by Crypto Owl, ensuring documented governance, controls, and oversight in line with international benchmark regulation expectations.

However, assets are selected and weighted using published rules rather than commercial deals. Being an affiliate partner does not guarantee a position in the index, and assets that no longer meet the criteria can be removed. Our index-based revenue from licensing is kept separate from our affiliate revenue.
